India's top military chief among 13 killed in air force helicopter crash in Himachal Pradesh

A top Indian Air Force general and 12 other soldiers were killed when a military helicopter crashed in the mountains in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, the government said.

Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa, the country's most senior military commander, said the helicopter carrying 37 people went down near Palampur, a town in Himachal Pradesh, as it was bringing reinforcements to a nearby base.

"It crashed around 7.30 am when the work was on to take the reinforcements from Palampur to the Siachen Glacier. It was a standard helicopter. It had 37 people on board," Dhanoa said.

There were no survivors, he said.

Three Air Force personnel were injured in the crash and air force spokesman Wing Commander Anupam Banerjee said a rescue team had been dispatched to the area.

India frequently deploys military helicopters in the Himalayan region of Siachen, where more than 10,000 Indian and Pakistani troops have faced off against each other at high altitudes since 1984.

Indian newspapers said the Super Heron helicopter crashed due to a technical fault.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences to the families of the air force officials, his office said.

The incident came just days after four Indian soldiers were killed in Kashmir when their patrol jeep broke through a roadblock and was ambushed by militants.

A fifth soldier, who was wounded in the attack, later died in hospital.
